FEAST TRADITIONALLY SPANISH FOR THE NEW YEAR
New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja) is celebrated with great enthusiasm, and food plays a hugely important role in the festivities. Obviously the most iconic New Year’s tradition in Spain is Las Uvas de la Suerte (The Grapes of Luck), where at the stroke of midnight, people eat 12 grapes, one for each chime of the clock, normally accompanied by a glass of cava. The custom is believed to bring good luck for each of the 12 months of the coming year.
But before that, the feasting is equally as important to fortify you for the party ahead and seafood plays a very significant part. So, traditionally, what does it include?
Jamón Ibérico – the highest -quality cured ham, served in wafer thin slices with the most prized being Jamón Ibérico de Bellota, from acorn-fed pigs, served as an appetizer and often alongside cheeses, olives, or bread.
Mariscos - seafood, including shrimp, lobster, clams, and other shellfish, are commonly served boiled, grilled, or as part of a seafood platter.
Sopa de Pescado – a flavourful fish soup, sometimes served as a starter for the New Year’s meal, especially in coastal regions. It´s made with a variety of fish, shellfish, and sometimes vegetables.
Piquillos Rellenos de Marisco – these sweet peppers are stuffed with seafood like crab or shrimp, often served as an appetizer and very much a part of the New Year tradition.
Bacalao - salt cod is a popular ingredient in Spanish cuisine, especially around the holidays served in various ways, such as in stews, salads, or simply grilled.
Cordero - in many regions of Spain, roast lamb is a traditional dish for major celebrations, including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. It’s typically slow-roasted with herbs and garlic to bring out rich flavours.
Turrón – a traditional Spanish nougat made from almonds, honey, sugar, and egg whites. It comes in two main varieties: turrón de Alicante (hard and crunchy) and turrón de Jijona (softer and creamier).
Mantecados - traditional dense Spanish shortbread-like cookies, typically made with almonds, flour, and lard or butter and a typical treat at New Year.
So there a little insight into foods that reflect Spain's regional diversity and rich culinary traditions, with a focus on bringing people together to share in the joy of the New Year. Many of these dishes are consumed in a relaxed, communal atmosphere, often lasting well into the early hours of New Year's Day.
